• The atmospheric pressure and the oxygen level decrease linearly with altitude. After a certain level, this situation puts human life at risk with addition of low environmental temperature. The cabin pressure on commercial aircraft is maintained at an average of 6,000-8000 feet level(1800-2400 meters). Even in this case, in-air humidity is low. Dry air inreases the loss of body fluids (Dehydration). Healthy people adapt to this environment with some physiological changes in the body.
• Inactivity, edema in the legs, pressure on the veins behind the knee, and increased blood density as a result of loss of fluid due to dry air; increases the risk of clot formation in deep veins in the leg. If this clot is dislodged and goes into the lungs, the life-threatening clinical process that we call Pulmonary Embolism occurs. This situation is also known as Economy Class Syndrome because the seating area is narrower. This is more likely for the elderly and for those with additional medical problems. Pregnancy is one of those condition with increased tendency for blood clotting.
• In the first three months of pregnancy, the abortion rate of flight attendants is 30 percent higher. Today, most of the international airlines do not permit pregnant flight attendants and pilots.
• There are two studies indicating that the risk of premature birth increases in those who have had a first pregnancy and who fly frequently . But these results need to be confirmed by new studies.
In the following situations Air travel may be dangerous;
Threatened Abortion
Findings suggestive or suspicious for preterm birth
High Blood Pressure
Uncontrolled Diabetes
Severe Anemia
Growth retardation in the fetus
